Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin synthesised in the skin via 7-dehydrocholesterol, a cholesterol precursor. Vitamin D3 then requires hydroxylation to form the active metabolite, calcitriol. Latest research shows that cholecalciferol is significantly more potent and effective in humans than Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).
