Solal Vitamin D3 helps in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth, but it also contributes to immune system function. Research shows that the D3 form (cholecalciferol) is significantly more potent and effective than the D2 form (ergocalciferol). Although sunlight exposure results in some vitamin D production, not enough vitamin D is produced, especially with most individuals staying out of the sun or applying sun-block which dramatically reduces production.
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin synthesised in the skin via 7-dehydrocholesterol, a cholesterol precursor. Vitamin D3 then requires hydroxylation to form the active metabolite, calcitriol. Latest research shows that cholecalciferol is significantly more potent and effective in humans than Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Although sunlight exposure results in some vitamin D production, recent research shows that not enough vitamin D is produced this way, especially with most people now staying out of the sun or applying sunblock which dramatically reduces vitamin D production. The major biological function of Vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium and reducing urinary loss of calcium, thereby maintaining bones and teeth. Vitamin D also plays a role in immune function.
